Reading, Pennsylvania ■ Ursinus College
Hello! I’m Kelly Johnson, a native of Reading, Pennsylvania. I recently graduated from Ursinus College with a double major in Spanish and Peace & Social Justice Studies. As an undergraduate, I discovered and strengthened my spirituality by serving as Musical Director of the Ursinus chapel program. My growing spirituality intersected with a concern for social justice through my volunteer work as an ESL instructor and afterschool tutor. Through these opportunities, I was exposed to the challenges faced by Latinx migrant communities in Pennsylvania.
The call to continue to deepen my spirituality and commitment to social justice drew me to serve this year with Border Servant Corps, where I will have the opportunity to more fully grow personally and with the BSC community. I am thrilled to serve at La Casa, Inc., a domestic violence shelter in Las Cruces, and am excited to learn about the history and present-day realities of those living in the border region. I look forward to the joys and challenges that this year will bring (including learning how to become a better cook!), and hope to cultivate meaningful relationships and foster community within and extending outside of BSC.
